Phil trained for three years as an actor at Rose Bruford Drama School and appeared in regional rep around the country, in Clive Barker's film Night Breed, on television in The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, An Actors Life for Me, Goggle Eyes... and as space ship science officer Finbow Lewis in 150 episodes of satellite TV Sci-fi soap Jupiter Moon!

He believes all directors should remind themselves how difficult acting is by getting up on stage from time to time and so he occasionally appears in his own productions. Parts have included Creon in Oedipus, Porfiri in Crime and Punishment, Fix in Around the World in Eighty Days, The British Ambassador in The king and I, Dr Seward in Dracula and  Max in the Sound of Music
